$14 million to acquire and prepare land for new sports complex
PITTSBURGH—The Property and Facilities Committee
of the University of Pittsburgh’s Board of Trustees approved
at its Nov. 7 meeting $43,151,300 in construction and renovation
projects as well as four leases; a highlight of the approved expenditures
is a $14,326,300 project to acquire and prepare land for the construction
of a new sports complex. The construction and renovation projects
are expected to create 206 construction and 82 construction-support
jobs, and the University will pay business privilege taxes of $57,731
on the construction projects.
The sports complex, which will include new baseball, softball, soccer,
track, and intramural facilities, will be located on the former
Robinson Court property adjacent to Pitt’s campus. This first
phase of construction includes relocation of utility lines, stabilizing
the site, and preparation of other infrastructures for the site.
Other projects approved by the committee include $9,085,000 in renovations
to sorority housing in Amos Hall; a $2,600,000 expansion of the
Chambers Hall fitness center on the Greensburg campus; $6,100,000
in laboratory and infrastructure upgrades for nanoscience research
in the Van de Graaff Building; $3,955,000 for installation of an
emergency generator for the Mid-campus Complex; $5,600,000 for a
redesign of the steam condensate collection systems in support of
the new Carillo Street Steam Plant; and $1,485,000 for renovations
to the fifth floor of the William Pitt Union.
